The follow-up title to Mouse’s Wood, Mouse on the River sees Mouse journey from his woodland home along the gently flowing river all the way to the sea.
The book follows Mouse as he rows downstream, following the changing environment of the river as it winds its way to the sea. His journey takes him past a willow coppice, through secretive reedbeds, into a busy town and out into the salt-air of the estuary. The book is full of fold out pages and flaps to lift, revealing hidden details and cosy waterside homes.
At the end of the book a double page spread provides a guide to the wildlife featured in the book, and which can also be spotted when you are out by a river.
When researching the book, I spent a lot of time sketching outdoors, huddled on riverbanks with my pencils and a flask of tea. This book has grown out of the joy that I find when drawing outside, and my love of the natural world.
